Today’s workout gear is more fashionable than sporty and brands like Nike, Puma and Adidas are taking notice. The industry that once targeted men in their adds is now realizing that the women’s market is emerging.
Puma has commissioned Rihanna as a spokesperson and that has drove sale up. Even Beyoncé is getting into the athletic game; in late March 2016 she launched a clothing line called Ivy Park that caters to the fashionable female who loves to work out.
Consumers are purchasing gear based on style and not athletic aesthetics. The bottom line is that they want to look good working out and be ready to go out for coffee or a veggie juice right after the workout.
In a recent article for the Wall Street Journal, Sata Geramo sites that as a result of the above,
“…… some mainstay sports brands and retailers are rethinking the balance between performance and fashion.”
