A decade later, Derek and I got to have our fairy tale destination wedding and exchange vows in front of close friends and family in the most beautiful villa overlooking the ocean in our beautiful hometown of Trinidad and Tobago. It was my whimsical fairytale brought to life. Our wedding day was intimate, unique and authentic. There was so much love and joy that the entire day was a euphoric experience. I was overflowing with happiness, from start to finish. All of the vendors we worked with brought so much ease and comfort that we would chose them a thousand times over. Every detail was done with intention and purpose. Walking down the aisle, I saw no one else but Derek. We were both overwhelmed with joy that everything we had been through brought us together to this very moment, we felt so thankful and full of gratitude . We had been through so much to get here, which made it even that much sweeter.
Some of the joys experienced were being able to get my family who are dispersed all over the world, together for one unforgettable night in Paradise. Family is everything to me, and the fact that Derek and I were able to pull this thing off and get everyone together for such a wonderful occasion meant so much to us. One of the unexpected hiccups was that the day before we were supposed to fly out, I realized my son’s passport was expired! Note to all brides planning a destination wedding, CHECK YOUR PASSPORTS IN ADVANCE! I was so caught up in getting all of the small details together I overlooked something so critical. Luckily, we were able to get an emergency renewal the day of and it all worked out. Phew!
My advice to all future brides, be confident, be optimistic, be fabulous! Roll with the punches, something is bound to not go exactly as planned and that’s ok. Little hiccups along the way make your wedding uniquely yours. Above all, be present. Live in the moment, this is YOUR day and it will be magical.
